Embracing Islam is a profound decision for a new Muslim, but it is just the start of their journey...
…we understand that the Shahada is just the first step. As a community we have a unique wealth of experience, spanning over 50 years, regarding how it feels to accept Islam, and what support is needed for new Muslims to gain confidence in their prayers and daily practice. We are establishing Shifa Mosque with the intention of being able to help many more people on their journey to accepting and practicing the Deen.
Our astonishingly diverse community includes many individuals who have themselves accepted Islam, each under different circumstances, having taken very different journeys to arrive at the Shahada. Drawing on this marvellous pool of mentorship we intend for Shifa Mosque to be a beacon of support, offering structured learning, community connection, and a safe space for new Muslims to grow in their faith.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said
"The one who guides to something good has a reward similar to that of its doer." (Muslim)
YOU CAN HELP US REACH MORE NEW MUSLIMS WITH SHIFA MOSQUE
With your support we can expand our work providing the guidance, education, and community that new Muslims need to thrive in their faith.
Guidance – Drawn from Experience.
Since the late 1960s, our community has been engaged in welcoming people to the deen. We have a legacy of experience in guiding new Muslims in their faith and a deep, often personal, understanding of how to support and nurture people in their first years of practicing Islam. We understand that new Muslims often face questions about lifestyle changes from friends and family, experience periods of uncertainty and adjustment and need a supportive community to aide them. Shifa Mosque will serve as a warm and welcoming environment for learning and observation, made all the richer by the hugely diverse backgrounds of our community members and those among us who also made the journey to Islam.
Education – Focusing on the Foundations
As well as emphasising formal study through classes on Islamic basics, Qur’an, and Arabic, our support structure offers experienced mentors to guide new Muslims and a safe space where questions are encouraged, and mistakes are met with patience and compassion. In line with our holistic approach, our goals are for new Muslims to experience and imbibe good adab, and be able to independently integrate Islam into their daily life.
Community – Building a Support Network
We have found that social support for new Muslims is key to helping them gain confidence in their prayers and their practice beyond the formal learning environment. Shifa Mosque will provide plenty of opportunities for new Muslims to meet with other Muslims, forging friendships and learning by observation and exposure to good company. Joining in and contributing to the mosque’s garden, food bank, soup kitchen, free market or social calendar, will help new Muslims find a sense of inclusion and belonging.
""When I took my shahadah, I felt both elated and overwhelmed. The support I received from this community made all the difference. They guided me through my first prayers, answered my countless questions, and made me feel truly part of the Ummah."
