 It is one of the many ways in which Allah encourages us to circulate wealth, along with zakat (the third pillar) sadaqa (charitable giving) and awqaf (trusts). Qard (Arabicقرض), translated as loan in English, means “to cut”, because historically the lender cut off part of their property to give to the borrower as a loan. The word hasan is derived from Ihsan (Arabicاحسان), which is translated as splendid or beautiful.
